Earlier this week the Mayo League announced the five recipients of the 2011/2012 third level scholarships. This initiative which is a first for the Mayo League is something that it hopes to expand in the coming years. The five recipients were Gerry Cunningham (Westport United), John Hutton (Claremorris), Owen McNamara (Conn Rangers), Chris Rowland (Castlebar Celtic), and Gerry Sweeney (Bangor Hibs). The five players will be presented with a cheque for their first instalment of the grant and a specially designed certificate at Milebush Park on Saturday, January 28 at 6.30pm. The Mayo League also thanked all those who applied for the scholarship and Arcon Recruitment, Castlebar, which carried out the interviews on all applicants on behalf of the Mayo League.

Connacht Rugby this week announced the release of the last batch of tickets for Connacht's first home Heineken Cup game against Toulouse on November 19. The final return of tickets has been received from Toulouse and numbers are strictly limited. These tickets, which are for the Bohermore and College Road terraces cost €30 each and will be sold on a first come first served basis so supporters are urged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. After two last-minute heartbreaking defeats at home, Moycullen are back on the road this weekend in their bid to claim a first Superleague basketball win this season.

With the Mayo League season put to bed until next spring after the cup finals and play-off, attention turns to national and provincial glory over the winter months. The second round of the Umbro FAI Junior Cup will take centre stage this Sunday all across the county. The big game in this round is the meeting of the newly crowned Super League champions Castlebar Celtic and the cup winners Iorras Aontaithe. The league champions will make the long journey north on Sunday morning to Carnenash to take in what should be a real cup classic. Celtic finished 14 points in front of Iorras in the league standings at the end of the season, with Iorras languishing in mid-table. However the black and red striped side will have been boosted by their recent cup win and Carnenash is never an easy place for any side to go to. When the sides met in the league this year in the same venue Celtic won 2-1 and in the return leg, Celtic handed out a 7-1 hammering on the second last day of the season. Nevertheless, Sunday’s game should be a lot closer than their last league meeting.
